This is another one of the stories I’ve postponed telling because it’s not easy and I had yet to feel “inspired”; then again, this blog is getting old and I’ve given myself yet another deadline to tell the stories that are important, inspired or not.

One of the stories I wanted to tell is the story of the “repetenti” or “corijenti” in our primary school. Each class had a few of them, more or less equally distributed among the “good classes” and we were all supposed to do our best to “pass” them – i.e., help them graduate, in what today seems like Finland educational equalitarianism.

Intrebat de o prietena daca sa mearga in BC sau Alberta la studii superioare, incurajat de "liberalizarea" vizelor canadiene pentru romani, cat si de o stire recenta despre o mama eroina din BC, care-a zamislit aproape 20 de progenituri, m-am hotarat sa-mi aplec iarasi privirile asupra Canadei. Nu-i prima data cand fac asta aici-sha. Am mai scris despre clima, despre vize si chiar despre imigrare si feminism. Si-acum, inc-odata :)

Canada se vinde (si multi cumpara ideea) ca un rai multietnic unde toti traiesc fericiti si-n concubinaj, inclusiv Tom si Jerry. Realitatea nu-i foarte departe de reclama, dar exista si exceptii si-aici prezint cateva. 

M-a deranjat intotdeauna rasismul la romani si argumentele gen "hai sa-i belim pe tigani, ca si altii au facut la fel". Cand ma pronunt impotriva acestor atitudini, o fac nu pentru ca altii n-au facut la fel, ci taman d-aia. Continui deci sa descriu politicile discriminatorii din trecutul Lumii Noi.

In primul episod, am aruncat o privire asupra familiei Ionce. Continui aici cu un raspuns (foarte) pe larg pentru o prietena care ma intreba unde-i mai fain sa-si faca un Ph.D, in BC sau Alberta.

About two months ago, Maftei, my math teacher in high school, has passed away (fb-maftei). I felt sorry, and that’s why the expression he used to invite us to the blackboard (“iesi pe straße” or “come out on the straße/street”) found its way in the title of this article, which is about the high-school physics teacher Sever Iosif Georgescu and his (or his kids’?) attempts to erase the negative events of his past. I have meant to write at length on this individual and, as expected, not only that reality caught up with me, but it left me far behind. I never expected for things to go this far, which is why I am revisiting it now.

A recent documentary about Romanians and their come on Channel4 was left seemingly ignored on this blog (though announced more than a week ago: 1, 2), so I hereby correct this oversight. The “EAT ME” photo refers to a similar but Canadian story.

While writing about Jihadi Jay Abdo, I had started writing about foreigners who study in Romania and half-way through I realized that this deserves a separate article. I had previously assumed (nature) that the Romanian prime-minister’s (Ponta) many scandals, some centered around his plagiarizing of his doctoral thesis will taint Romanian education and significantly decrease its appeal. Further investigation revealed that many are still interested, although it is hard to determine to what extent the scandals have caused the Romanian tuition fees to be the lowest in Europe, or that is due to other market forces. As usual, the links are listed at the end.

The recent debate of Romanian politics in the European Parliament was the grotesque conclusion to this summer of our disco tent.
