Octopus vs nanaUtolo

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , , ,

There was a recent showdown in Oscars documentaries between Colectiv and My Octopus Teacher. I rooted for Collective and it reminded me of a long running Italian TV series from my childhood, La Piovra. Caracatita a castigat si traducerea in romana pe FataCarte.

Anti-aging Sugar Tax Zahar

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , ,

I pity the politicians who want to do something good. They can’t clickbait their laws. For instance, the measure to tax sugary stuff can and should be called an anti-aging tax or, in Romanian, “contributia pentru o tinerete fara batranete si-o veatza fara de moarte”.

Butoi II. Tudorel Badea Severin. Si cu noi.

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , ,

Unlike most of my Romanian friends, who are angered by the details of the 112/police (EMS) response to Alexandra Macesanu’s increasingly desperate calls, I am far more upset by police colonel, university professor and forensic psychologist Tudorel Badea Butoi-Severin and the inconsequential censure by CNCD following his deeply offensive, misogynistic, victim-blaming comments. I believe that the hostility and inadequacy of the police response is rooted in the attitude that Prof Butoi has expressed and this bigotry is the root cause of police inaction and incompetence.

Raspunsuri/Answers: Cornel G. Comsa, PSDi

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , , ,

Cu exceptia introducerii, acest articol este in limba romana. As promised, I publish the answers received to the questions posed over the past few days with the deadline set on May 15. We did not specify a time for the deadline and as we write this article, it is possible that someone else may be sending us a reply. If that’s the case, comment on this article to let us know.

Venus Incident III–Baile Herculane

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , ,

I just had today, on WhatsApp, a conversation with a former classmate, who posted some photos from Baile Herculane (Herculean Baths? – a touristic destination from Roman times with geothermal springs). The situation is dire. I advised her rather strongly to fight, to which she countered with the refrain I constantly hear in this situations: “you are disconnected from the Romanian reality”.

PISA 2015 II: more on Asia

Thrown (Ţâpat) in ,

After , here we expand on our knowledge of the top-performing Asian countries, which share some important characteristics.

Radio Impuls = expired sausage

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , ,

The Romanian expression would be “niste carnati expirati” though in English I could’ve called them hotdogs or patsies just the same. Now, I owe a new installment in an older series, due to a debt born in comments; I know that and I’ll get to it eventually. However, this one is simpler and takes less time to write, which is why I am writing it now, quickly.

Horatiu Pepine romansplains at DW

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , ,

Despite having better things to do and write about, a recent article published by Deutsche Welle annoyed me enough to get me to write about the non-debate happening in USA and discuss abortion.

Madalina Ghenea in Sorrentinos Youth (2015)

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , ,

I was going through a movie marathon when I started this article. I thought I’d seen something in Ghenea’s performance, then I wasn’t so sure. And time passed.

2 girls, 1 cop (PLM XIX)

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , ,

Were the two girls, of each at least one lives in London and was traveling back home, subject to unwarranted aggression, or were they able to transform their own arrest into a long-winded drama, at the expense of the image and reputation of the Romanian Police?

Hajduk/Outlaw Werewolves/Lycans Dacians/Gauls/Getae

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , ,

Recently, one of the few blogs I read went off-line, after publishing one episode of their epic sagas. It’s [sort of] about Dacians, and as a sign of solidarity, I’ve decided to give the non-Romanian world an idea about it.

In Uterus Envy, Ilie Nasty Nastase

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , , , ,

Some recent Romanian news led me to consider the possibility that many Romanian men suffer from an undiagnosed affliction: Uterus envy. Let us together discover what that means, and how this was already named “womb envy” by a psychoanalyst named HORNEY.

Inconsistencies: Basescu in the Guild of the Guilty

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , , ,

I have in the past voted for the (former) President Basescu and even raised to his defence (more or less) when he was accused of slapping an impertinent child. Yet his latest display of inconsistency is more than I can bear.

Back to School with Google Earth Pro

Thrown (Ţâpat) in

I don't work for Google nor do they pay me in any way, but when I recently learned about their Google Earth Pro for Free promotion, I jumped at the opportunity to take yet another trip to my primary school and what would be the second instalment of my ”” series.

Zalmoxe by Sfinx, 1978

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , ,

Although I have written briefly about progressive rock, I shied away thus far from Romanian progressive rock. That's rather odd, considering that the apogee of that genre in Romania is universally considered to be the eponymous Zalmoxe by Sfinx, released (more like “censored”) in 1978.

Poc-Rrrom IV

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , , ,

More than two years have passed since my last and today, inspired by a story I've just read, I've decided I'll go through with this one.

Irish Travellers and Roma Adoption

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , ,

My resolve to stop speaking about the difference between Roma / Gypsies and Romanians was recently shaken by an Irish couple, one of whom had a Roma sister adopted from Romania.

Ad Kalendas Dacas Guarantee

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , ,

Feeling that the previous article, on how I can help you with your misunderstandings or simply to better understand certain concepts you may be unfamiliar with, was incomplete, I added a few more clauses, mostly having to do with a money-back guarantee and also describing my first attempts at implementing the answer.

Jihad Jay Abdo, Cluj Engineer

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , , ,

@JihadAbdo is an L.A.-based actor with more than 43 films, tons of TV series and lots of plays in four languages. One of those languages is Romanian.

How I met Gabriel Liiceanu

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , , ,

Though inordinate, this childhood memory was quite far from being an extraordinary event, and as such, I wasn't going to write about it. But a recent, excellent article but this quasi-famous disciple of an even more famous philosopher caused me to reconsider and share this story with you.
