Repatriated Romanian from USA at Hotnews

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , ,

Hotnews has previously interviewed Romanian diaspora people, which we covered, and we have also been profiling others in the diaspora ourselves. This interview is somewhat new in that the interviewee is "returned" - and we expect to be many more like him in the coming years.

Titi Aur vs Cyclists

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , , ,

In a recently published article on Euronews (en-roadfat), Alice Tidey asks the question where in Europe are roads deadliest; the answer is posted even before the question: Romania. We decipher a recent “ProTV News” news segment (spt-victime) where Titi Aur, a “defensive driving instructor”, reveals a deeply seated murderous misunderstanding in terms of the rules of the road, a misunderstanding that he shares.

Adriana Oprea's writing privileges should be revoked

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , , ,

I have recently read an opinion by some “journo” in a tabloid on how anonymous SIM cards should be sold no more (i.e., make them available only to those producing ID). I argue that the writing privileges of this person should be suspended.

CaracaRimaru

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , ,

Whereas in English "Caracal" refers to a “medium-sized wild cat”, in Romania it’s a small town, possibly named after the long disappeared animal. Recently, what may very well be a serial killer has been arrested after some agonizing, train-wreck of a police investigation. This would be the first such criminal there in a long time.

less partisanship, more understanding

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , ,

Soros and at least one Koch started holding hands for a common purpose: they call it something else, but it’s really about ending America’s “world cop” legacy role. Far more important to Romanians, on the foremost blog in the SE Of europe (ran out of capitals), a guest author makes almost as many language mistakes as the owner but has more consistently enlightened viewpoints.

How To Immigrate To Canada III

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , , , ,

Whenever I talk to Romanians who want to come to Canada and I answer questions, I always end up being a bit upset. I find that people ask me too many simple questions they could answer themselves with Google and too few of the “important” questions. Maybe there’s a guru hiding inside of me, and here’s where I set him free.

PISA 2015 II: more on Asia

Thrown (Ţâpat) in ,

After , here we expand on our knowledge of the top-performing Asian countries, which share some important characteristics.

PISA 2015, or Eastern vs Western education

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , ,

The results of the latest PISA testing have come out. Will I manage to write about the educational styles in Canada (which is 4th, tied with Finland, after Singapore, Japan and Estonia) and Romania (48th out of 70)?

Fire prevention vs over-regulation

Thrown (Ţâpat) in ,

Predictably, the fire at the Colectiv nightclub in Bucharest has resulted in calls for moar regulation! and a search for the culprits. Interior Minister Oprea can breathe now that the media is no longer focusing on his killing of a policeman through unnecessary, elitist motorcades. Let me explain why the requests for more regulation are misguided.

Colectiv #suntemcolectiv #wearecolectiv

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , ,

I was planning to go out tonight, and on my way out, my eyes fell on a headline: "Romanian nightclub blast kills 25". By the time I looked it up online, the casualties had gone to 26. And memories of a few nights in Bucharest came back.

2 girls, 1 cop (PLM XIX)

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , ,

Were the two girls, of each at least one lives in London and was traveling back home, subject to unwarranted aggression, or were they able to transform their own arrest into a long-winded drama, at the expense of the image and reputation of the Romanian Police?

Corruption and Cur-rupt-ion

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , , , ,

A recent Op-Ed in New York Times seems to have caused a fair amount of consternation in both Romania as well as among my diaspora friends. Ion could equally be Ion Iliescu, recently green-lighted to be re-investigated in the “Mineriada” file, Adrian Nastase, the suicidal former premier and failed presidential candidate who had become the first test case of prosecutorial overreach in the case of an elite aparatchik, or even Patrick Basham, not afraid to confront the warm, fuzzy racism/scepticism/antiziganism-fuelled consensus that Romania is “doing something”.

Zalmoxe by Sfinx, 1978

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , ,

Although I have written briefly about progressive rock, I shied away thus far from Romanian progressive rock. That's rather odd, considering that the apogee of that genre in Romania is universally considered to be the eponymous Zalmoxe by Sfinx, released (more like “censored”) in 1978.

Dr Simona Tibu: police brutality or white female privilege?

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , , , ,

The video of Dr Simona Tibu's arrest and assault has recently been released (cbc-video), after a protracted legal battle. What is debatable is to what extent is this a case of police brutality / use of unnecessary and excessive force, or white female entitlement.

Poverty and IQ in BlegooVision

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , , , , ,

I recently got an article from our very own , who wanted to see his thoughts published and critiqued around here. It required serious formatting, but I thought it’s a free service I can provide to the second highest commenter (in terms of quantity) on this blog. My comments will be highlighted inline and concentrated at the end.

WhatsApp frustrations and Debating satisfactions

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , ,

On the subject of long-distance communications (following my recent WhatsApp-ian conversion). And then I added something a little less annoying and quite satisfying: a debating project.

iohannis = luther + ostsiedlung (Cf2C VIII)

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , ,

My notwithstanding, I suspect most of the people who voted for Iohannis do not really know who he is, apart from the fact that he is not Ponta. I'm trying to bring a bit more color and background to his wooden personality.

Dacia, Gypsies and Romanistan

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , , , ,

I’ve hinted before on my personal struggle with answering such philosophical questions as “where are you from?” or “where were you born.” As I started answering with “Dacia,” more and more of those asking me, unsatisfied with this answer, started to look it up. One such acquaintance, a Brazilian dude, was kind enough to let me record our conversation. So I made a movie to share it more easily (like the Jens interview).

Irish Travellers and Roma Adoption

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , ,

My resolve to stop speaking about the difference between Roma / Gypsies and Romanians was recently shaken by an Irish couple, one of whom had a Roma sister adopted from Romania.

MH17, again

Thrown (Ţâpat) in , , , , , , ,

Discussing the tragedy is inescapable. I had started doing this a few days ago, focusing mostly on Andrei Anghel, but didn’t have the time to say all that I wanted to say, which is why I’m continuing here.
