In my previous election adventures, I have relied heavily on the 'testvote' application and even shared and commented my results with you, my readers. I was planning to do the same this time, then I noticed something peculiar: all the candidates have virtually the same position! Upon further investigating, it appeared that either the application has been updated in the meantime or there was an error due to poor Internet connectivity and bad coding.
What I mean by “virtually the same” is that all the candidates I mentioned and ranked in my previous article [appeared to] have answered “I don’t know” to all the questions, except for the first one, on the role of the president, where their answers vary by a tiny bit. This question asked whether the President should be able to “fire” the Prime-Minister and here almost everyone (i.e., Tariceanu, Kelemen, Macovei and Ponta) answered “yes, of course” except for Udrea and Iohannis, who answered “maybe.”
LE: I discovered, when re-testing before publication, that the testvot.eu app was now working properly and candidate choices had now been populated. This suggest that the app had previously malfunctioned or was being updated as I was using it.
The TestVot team describes its approach succinctly: it comes up with questions that are relevant to the electorate, invites all the candidates to answer them (or research candidates positions for answers), then allows you to compare your answers to the same questions to the answers of all the candidates who have bothered replying.
Ai la dispoziție 24 de întrebări, pe baza cărora vei afla ce candidat se apropie cel mai mult de opțiunile tale. Rolul președintelui României, reprezentarea cetățenilor, apărarea și securitatea națională, politica externă, relațiile României cu Uniunea Europeană, sunt teme importante pentru fiecare alegător. Dacă unele subiecte ți se par necunoscute, înseamnă că ai aflat ceva nou despre propunerile candidaților aflați în competiția electorală. Pentru fiecare întrebare există cinci variante de răspuns: total de acord, de acord, poziție neutră, dezacord, și dezacord total. În plus, la unele întrebări există o explicație a problemei și a pozițiilor divergente. La sfârșit vei primi o listă de candidați, de la cel mai apropiat la cel mai depărtat față de poziția ta în legătură cu afirmațiile incluse în chestionar, precum și o analiză grafică a răspunsurilor pe care le-ai dat întrebărilor din chestionar.
Este posibil sa nu răspunzi la o întrebare. Acea întrebare nu va fi inclusă în analiza pe baza căreia programul MRC îți oferă răspunsul final: „Ce candidat este mai apropiat de opțiunile mele politice?”. Cu cât răspunzi la mai multe întrebări cu atât va fi mai exactă analiza pe care o vei primi.
Atenție la opțiunea neutru!
- Utilizatorul trebuie să decidă dacă este într-adevăr neutru față de toate variantele de rezolvare a respectivei probleme publice sau nu are nici o opinie despre subiect. Sunt opțiuni diferite și au implicații pentru plasarea față de pozițiile exprimate de candidați.
- A alege o opinie neutră aduce cu sine o compatibilitate sporită cu candidații care se plasează neutri pe respectiva temă, candidați care se declară centriști pe respectivul subiect și nu au o preferință pentru un pol sau celălalt.
- A alege că nu aveți o poziție, vă plasează la distanță egală și maximă de toți candidații, dar puteți afla poziția candidatului pe respectivul subiect în graficele pe domenii.
- În cazul în care candidatul nu are nici o poziție, atunci el este considerat a fi la distanță egală și maximă de toate cele cinci opțiuni.
Biroul Electoral Central a validat 14 candidaturi dintre cele depuse pentru alegerile pentru funcția de Președinte al României ce vor avea loc pe data de 02 Noiembrie 2014.
În aplicația TestVot au fost incluși doar acei candidați de la care s-au primit răspunsuri la cele 24 de întrebări sau pentru care s-a reușit identificarea unor luări de poziție în mass media sau în programele electorale, referitoare la majoritatea temelor incluse în chestionarul TestVot. Astfel, au fost incluși următorii candidați (în ordinea prezentată pe pagina oficială a Biroului Electoral Central):
- Victor-Viorel Ponta - candidat din partea Alianței Electorale PSD-UNPR-PC [avere, interese]
- Klaus-Werner Iohannis - candidat din partea Alianței Creștin-Liberale Partidul Național Liberal-Partidul Democrat Liberal ACL [avere, interese]
- Monica-Luisa Macovei - candidată independentă [avere, interese]
- Hunor Kelemen - candidat din partea UDMR [avere, interese]
- Elena-Gabriela Udrea - candidată din partea PMP [avere, interese]
- Călin-Constantin-Anton Popescu-Tăriceanu - candidat independent [avere, interese]
According to them, only the 6 candidates listed in the screen capture above as well as in my previous article (do NOT vote) have bothered replying (or the team behind the app –i.e., openpolitics / medianresearch dot ro “inferred” their answers from their literature). The following candidates have not been included in the TestVot application; time-permitting, I will ask each candidate to clarify their positions and post them on this blog. I am reproducing them in the order they are presented on the BEC website.

Yet all the questions in the TestVot application are very important questions; they are questions any candidate should be able to answer, and the fact that none of them has done so is quite troubling. I can think of 3 possibilities why this may have happened:
- TestVot is lying and have yet to ask and get answers from all the candidates (this was corrected before publication).
- TestVot published their website before updating all the answers, or there was an issue caused by bad programming + changing IP + bad connectivity on my end
- Mencken’s prophecy has come true (see my translation in the Critique of Emotional Reasoning; the quote is on the “White House”, but I translated with “Cotroceni”).
- The candidates have outsourced their PR to the same firm or volunteer.
Though in the meantime I was able to establish that the answers have been published, the question remains whether the team behind it gave all the candidates the same attention and sent everybody the questionnaire. My guess is they have not and will attempt to establish this soon enough.
