In 1992, Ion Iliescu dadea un interviu unui ziar prietenos in care spunea ca el crede ca poate fi democratie si sub un "despot luminat". Daca citeai interviul cu atentie, nu era nimic absolut ingrozitor in el; acest citat insa a fost replicat, disecat si mediatizat in special de presa de opozitie. Putin avea sa duca acest concept spre noi culmi de implinire.
