The elections for the European Parliament are coming up soon, and this time around, I decided to ask all candidates a few questions and post their answers. But before sending these questions, it makes sense to look at the details, the first and most important being that the voting day is May 26 between 7:00 and 21:00, local time (EST) and there’s not voting by correspondence.

Iata ca m-am invrednicit si eu sa-mi pun pe hartie gandurile apropo de votul de azi. Am incercat sa citesc si cateva bloguri, dar opinia predominanta este ca trebuie sa votam nul fiindca asa, vezi Doamne, i-am pedepsi pe politicieni. Dupa cum i-am spus si lui Arhi, in comparatie cu ideea de a nu vota sau a vota nul, ideea de a-ti bea propria urina este geniala.

Am fost la Consulat sa-mi scot pasaport, prilej cu care iar am inceput sa ma-ntreb daca eu chiar sunt roman, sau numai am alte asteptari. Daca insa te astepti sa ma plang de serviciile consulare, s-ar putea sa fii dezamagit.

While writing about Jihadi Jay Abdo, I had started writing about foreigners who study in Romania and half-way through I realized that this deserves a separate article. I had previously assumed (nature) that the Romanian prime-minister’s (Ponta) many scandals, some centered around his plagiarizing of his doctoral thesis will taint Romanian education and significantly decrease its appeal. Further investigation revealed that many are still interested, although it is hard to determine to what extent the scandals have caused the Romanian tuition fees to be the lowest in Europe, or that is due to other market forces. Eroul nostru - adica eu - intra in Consultatul Roman, dupa ce s-a-nvartit prin alte parti, fiind in intarziere din motive multiple cum ar fi vina sa, mai precis o adanca incapacitate de a prognoza timpul real necesar chestiilor care nu-i plac. Oare mai si iese? Citeste si afla!

Asa cum ziceam, am fost sa votez la consulat. Unde am gasit romani, am stat de vorba cu ei (lucru bun) si m-am enervat asteptandu-mi docomentele (lucru mai putin bun).

Ca dupa fiecare alegere unde miza-i mare, oamenii interesati in rezultat si rezultatul strans, au aparut si vor apare acuzatii de fraudare. Eu nu cunosc exemple concrete, dar aud tot timpul de oameni care cunosc alti oameni care sunt siguri ca fraudarea s-a produs. Si-ncerc sa analizez broblemu'.

I happened to be in the area so I decided to pay the consulate a visit, not expecting to be able to vote, but hoping to learn more info about my programmed visit for my passport renewal. I didn't waste a lot of time, but in typical Romanian fashion, someone managed to use my time with info that is likely useless.

Although I already said I’m not voting, due to atrocious bureaucratic hurdles at a time when it was supposed to be as easy to vote as possible in the most expensive election so far, I’m having second thoughts. Voting is an opportunity to give some unknown hopeful a chance, so I will have a quick look at the lesser known candidates who are worthy of a second look (apart from frontrunners).

Not only did Klaus Iohannis manage to snatch victory from the claws of the Red Menace, but he did so by a huge, devastating margin AND on the surge in voter participation not only in the diaspora, but also in our birthplace. It’s a November Christmas miracle! 

Though it may be unfair to extend the failure of the Romanian National Press Agency (Agerpres) and the Romanian External Affairs Ministry to an entire nation, let us not forget that part of their job is to represent the country. The recent faux-pas, confusing the French contours with the German one in a one-print commemorative brochure is, unfortunately, indicative of the dilettantism that has taken over the Romanian government.
