The initial motivation in starting this blog was telling a number of "origin" stories. Some I have already told, some I left for later, but for the most part, telling these stories is the main raison d'etre for this collection of characters (i.e., letters, numbers and strange people – the constituent parts of this blog). One of them is the story of my last year or so in Romania, a time when I lived on my own in my Drumul Taberei / Favorit apartment.

Somebody, somewhere, posted a photo with a few of my primary school (Scoala Generala nr. 197) teachers. The fear of forgetting gets me to share some memories here.

Yet another childhood photo is stirring up memories. This time is with colleagues and friends, rather than teachers.

With all the March 8th celebrations, I got this idea about writing an article about each important woman in my life, starting with early childhood or as far as my memories go. That would take a while.

Today [or, more precisely, a few months ago when I re-started this article] I’ve seen the first real professionally done Romanian TV news segment on Roma. It seems to belong to Carmen Avram, Antena 3 undeva-n Ardeal. But rather than describe the atrocious conditions Roma people live in, I’d much rather tell you a small part of my own experience growing up in Bucharest in the 80s.

Ca tot am deschis firul amintirilor, sa-ti deschid o paranteza – de la fomei frumoase, la sah. Poate asta nu-i genul de excitatie la care te asteptai, dar crede-ma: e bun si asta!

Am vrut sa testez aplicatia de puoze-colaj a unui concitadin – Vince Cheung. Am pus poze din Bucurestiul vechi, poze de la liceul si scoala mea generala, poze din Drumul Taberei..

Am decis sa particip c-un videoclip in concursul Selgros Romania – un bun prilej sa va zic mai multe povesti.

Incepusem sa povestesc in seria PocRrrom despre patania mea cu Scarlat, un tigan care si-a trimis cateva flegme, din senin, pe dovleacul meu, pe vremea cand eram pusti de scoala generala. Si cum m-am resemnat (mai mult sau mai putin), dar i-am povestit totusi povestea lui Bamo.

Se cade sa scriu despre Oscars, c-asa-i traditia. Sa moara-n chinuri traditia! Va voi spune o poveste din copchilarie.

When discussing history (as anything else), my primary source of “inspiration” is not Wikipedia but rather my own memory. I look up Wikipedia to find supporting evidence, however, as it can easily be accessed by anyone who’d want to verify or learn more. And in all this, the “go to figure” in my memories is the history teacher, Georgeasca.
