About two months ago, Maftei, my math teacher in high school, has passed away (fb-maftei). I felt sorry, and that’s why the expression he used to invite us to the blackboard (“iesi pe straße” or “come out on the straße/street”) found its way in the title of this article, which is about the high-school physics teacher Sever Iosif Georgescu and his (or his kids’?) attempts to erase the negative events of his past. This is the third installment in the Georgescu, Iosif SEVER saga:

I have meant to write at length on this individual and, as expected, not only that reality caught up with me, but it left me far behind. I never expected for things to go this far, which is why I am revisiting it now.

Somebody, somewhere, posted a photo with a few of my primary school (Scoala Generala nr. 197) teachers. The fear of forgetting gets me to share some memories here.

Viata este un sir de experiente. Aici e cine sunt, in ce scop, si ce-am facut in ultimii cinci (zeci de) ani. Cat mai pe larg, narcisist si pe-ntelesul tutulor, in 2 sau mai multe parti. Asta ar fi prima.

O furtuna de acuzatii bantuie de ceva vreme in blogo.ro-oaie. Unii ii acuza pe altii de furt, altii fura de sparg si nu recunosc, iar majoritatea dau din umeri si zic: "si ce daca?! toti suntem bortosi!". Iar eu incerc sa descalcesc ghemotocul de craci din Top Secret.

We're busy, we got stuff to do, but no matter how busy we are (or maybe because we are so), we need to make time for art.

I just had today, on WhatsApp, a conversation with a former classmate, who posted some photos from Baile Herculane (Herculean Baths? – a touristic destination from Roman times with geothermal springs). The situation is dire. I advised her rather strongly to fight, to which she countered with the refrain I constantly hear in this situations: “you are disconnected from the Romanian reality”.

When discussing history (as anything else), my primary source of “inspiration” is not Wikipedia but rather my own memory. I look up Wikipedia to find supporting evidence, however, as it can easily be accessed by anyone who’d want to verify or learn more. And in all this, the “go to figure” in my memories is the history teacher, Georgeasca.

Incepusem, intr-un articol inspirat de fratele maghiar (ab ovo), sa discut influenta lui Iliescu asupra mea, a plecarii mele si a societatii romanesti. Un astfel de articol este echivalentul cutiei Pandorei, pe care continui aici s-o deschid.

Am descoperit acum o saptamana o gugumanie, de data asta in evz, si-aici ma refuvoltez. Este vorba de rezultatele PISA 2009 si cum au fost reflectate in presa. A luat mult timp, fiindca le prezint si eu.

The results of the latest PISA testing have come out. Will I manage to write about the educational styles in Canada (which is 4th, tied with Finland, after Singapore, Japan and Estonia) and Romania (48th out of 70)?

One contest I thought about is superscrieri (superwritings). That got me thinking of other contests, such as fiction in Canada or the US Visa Lottery.

In Romanian, “firea”, the articulated form of the noun fire, is part of many idioms. It is also the name of the current Bucharest Mayor, who recently had to shamefully backtrack on announcing the winner for a logo contest, due to a likely case of plagiarism. This fickle-mindedness seems to be common to her entire party, PSD, struggling as it is with the conflict between its deep desire to "forget and forgive" cases of corruption and the public commitments, forced by weeks or #rezist protests to the contrary.

Dupa ce-am dezbarligat nitel promovarea turismului romanesc, ne oprim asupra unor scandaluri mai recente si poate mai reale. Este vorba despre moneda cu patriarhul antisemit si, poate intr-un articol viitor, atacul lui Sarko impotriva romilor.

Am primit acum cateva zile un raspuns de la un prof de fizica (Iosif Sever Georgescu) ce apare intr-unul din articolele mele mai vechi, publicat initial de Cracanel. O fi el sau o fi fi-s'u?

Dupa cum se stie, cel mai popular concurs al blogosferei romanesti si-a decernat premiile. "Ceremonia", care-i mai mult o petrecere, a fost transmisa in direct de tandemul Realitatea / Cotidianul. Eu nu m-am chinuit prea tare sa castig, dar m-am uitat totusi la stream-izor.

Ma plangeam recent ca ma bombardeaza Adobe cu reclame, ca sa vin in tara sa lucrez pentru ei. S-ar zice ca nu numai in ce ma priveste pe mine strica ei orzul pe bonobo.

Another article (after Sevil) that does not give me any particular pleasure but must be, nonetheless, written is on Kovesi and the ethics of her thesis. More specifically, how things we said about Ponta’s should apply to Kovesi’s as well, yet few of us have the courage to maintain that kind of consistency in our own convictions, let alone demanding that Kovesi does in hers.
