I recently discovered a new and interesting blog. I'll present an enlightening article.

I have in the past participated in 'Romanians against others' contests (such as Brancusi @ Saatchi, cum 2 Ro) and never really liked the idea. So I organized quite a few of my own on this blog (guess the relevant category) and again participated in home-grown ones (selgros, roz cu bunici, leustean, verona, economy), and that was better. This time, I have in front of me a list of Romanian inventions (docx) and I get to vote which one deserves a prize from 3M. You can and should vote as well – see the link below.

The most important debating tournament in Romania took place at the “Mihai Viteazu” high-school and the reporter summarized a debate with a BIRT on whether the Romanian government should provide reparations to the Roma community for the Holocaust. This is worth a discussion.

Ever since I have decided to focus on English language blogs, I find every now and then news about Romania that beg to be commented. I never have enough time to do so, but today, as I read about the chewing gum thieves, I shall make an exception.

Mi-a fost varata-n ochi recent o discutie a asemanarilor intre o veche poveste hindusa si Miorita. La arhetipe(se)le lui Jung (si chiar Nietzsche) nu cred ca voi reusi s-ajung in acest articol. Este vorba despre unu' Joseph Campbell si unu' Jung si mituri universale, gen.

This could very well be a paid post, but it's not (unless you consider a free concert and a couple of Pepsi bottles as 'payment'). I was just passing by their tent and the music caught my ear; I enjoyed it while watching a cover of Talking Heads (Psycho Killer). All in all, a great opportunity to reminisce on what Pepsi meant in my childhood.

I have recently attended the “space” / poetry / jamming session I mentioned earlier and predictably, I chose to read a poem by Marin Sorescu. I thought I present it here as well.

A weight trainer has gained weight only to lose it. His weight pinnacle was achieved on November 5 and since then it’s been dropping rapidly. Yet some fatties won’t even accept a sendup to that blog – they take it as an insult.

I have been staying away from the news of the moment, but this recent tragedy hits extremely close to home, whichever way a member of the Toronto Romanian diaspora (including myself) chooses to define that notion.

While writing about Jihadi Jay Abdo, I had started writing about foreigners who study in Romania and half-way through I realized that this deserves a separate article. I had previously assumed (nature) that the Romanian prime-minister’s (Ponta) many scandals, some centered around his plagiarizing of his doctoral thesis will taint Romanian education and significantly decrease its appeal. Further investigation revealed that many are still interested, although it is hard to determine to what extent the scandals have caused the Romanian tuition fees to be the lowest in Europe, or that is due to other market forces. This having been started as a Romanian blog, I first wrote what to do in Amsterdam when you’re alive in Romanian, with a friend, as an exquisite corpse. Recently, I met yet another Dutch girl who gave me more than one smile, so in return, I figured I'd give the world the translated version.

A while back I had an overseas guest misbehaving. I had invited her for a longer stay in Canada but it turned out she had difficulties living without regular fights. I offered to make a reservation at a hostel and cover her costs at a hostel for the rest of her stay but she refused and I was eventually bribed to give in due to my membership affiliation.

@Simona_Halep’s win is an amazing victory and an event we’ll be remembering and talking about at least until her next Grand Slam.  Sadly, it was only hours before all those hungry to for publicity started to throw shade, claim ownership and speculate it for their own nefarious ends.

I am often curious to look for and find an awesome blog – a blog to blow my hair back. The question is, how? Well, every now and then this blog is visited by people who find me most likely by looking at “neighbor” blogs on the same page of their ranking in various trackers. I will do the same.

Iar am ramas in urma cu ce se-ntampla in Ro. Ultimele ecouri pe care le-am prins despre Romania din presa au de-a face cu case din noroi, studenti straini intr-un sat amarat, nemtzii ofticati pe Nokia si Romania la festivalul de film din Venezia. Multe s-or intamplatara de-atunci, si ca sa nu uit, le trec in raboj.

Am primit recent un indemn de a face un sumar cu lucrurile simple din jurul meu care merg pe dos. Dar pentru ca lucrurile simple nu ma intereseaza, voi incerca sa fac un sumar cu cele mai mari probleme ale societatii canadiene. Asa cum le vad eu, desigur.

It's a sad day for Ioan Pop, his family, and Romanian Christian Orthodoxy in general, but on the bright side, the abused women are finally getting some closure and Ioan Pop won’t have a chance to repeat his weird brand of sexual religiosity. As usual, I am not content with only reporting on the news; I have a few other things to say.
