I just learned of two significant Romanian movie events in Toronto: Porumboiu's Whistlers is having its (wide?) release and TIFF a "survey" of 50 years of Romanian Cinema.

I haven’t been able to find many movies with by Romanians or about Romanians at TIFF 19 (Toronto International Film Festival) I thought I mention them before the Festival is over.

In the past few days, most of the Romanians I know received two important gifts: PSD didn’t win the elections and Dragnea, its [widely considered] corrupt boss, was sentenced to jail and went there shortly thereafter. Though I’m not a Dragnea/PSD fan, I find the celebrations a bit empty. What bugs me is that only one candidate answered my questions re: #EP2019, and I fear that the vast majority of voters never tried to clarify the programme of the candidates they voted for, nor have they tried to interact with them. Let's try to find reasons.

I watched it a few days ago and promised myself I’ll write down my thoughts before this forgettable creation disappears from memory. On the plus side, I identified a Romanian actress in it.

This is an (Austro?-)German movie shortlisted for the Foreign Oscar and filmed in Bucharest. It’s great and rated 7.6 on IMDB, with a Metascore of 93. It is also remarkably warm and positive toward Romania.

There was a time when talking about TIFF meant an image. Then, starting around 1975, it meant the Toronto International Film Festival. Then Romania thought that copying this name is OK, and now I find that I have to differentiate between tiff.ro and tiff.net. Here we are simply listing the Romanian movies at TIFF.net (in Toronto).

Despite this being one of the reasons I started this blog, the more I try to engage in online debates, the angrier and more unsatisfied I get. Before I decide to completely and always avoid them, it may be worth looking into why they are this way.

@JihadAbdo is an L.A.-based actor with more than 43 films, tons of TV series and lots of plays in four languages. One of those languages is Romanian.

Cateva stiri despre filme romanesti la / si festival-E-uri.

Dupa oaresce framantari si emotii, aflam ca Festivalul Filmului Romanesc din Toronto va avea totusi loc, dar mai tarziu. Pre-Festival screening incepe maine, Sambata, 16/04/2011.

Este mai putin stiut azi ca Romania a incercat si ea o primavara relativa prin anii ‘60. Lucrurile s-au inrautatit treptat in anii ‘70 aducand Romania intr-un faliment al optimismului in anii ‘80. Ceva s-a intamplat, dar ce?

Citind articolul cu Clastarfac, cititorul meu imaginar ma intreba recent ce-i cu codana, ce-am facut cu ea. Si m-am gandit sa dau si-un exemplu de Clastarfac din filmu' Top Secret.

Am o pofta nebuna sa va povestesc ceva despre Malcolm McDowell. Voi incepe insa cu Kubrick, in noul atac al clo-tlonilor.

Ca tot am descoperit eseurile mele vechi de franceza, am decis sa (re)public si o critica de film facuta in acei domoli ani '90. E tot in franceza si ca si celelalte, textul e plin de greseli pe care nu mai stau sa le corectez.

Nu m-am dus la festival decat la cateva filme. M-am gandit sa scriu despre ele acum, cat sunt inca fresh si chiar sa prezint cateva shorts (scurt-metraje) intr-o colectie.

Am facut mai multe chestii romanesti pe 6 Decembrie: m-am intalnit cu niste prieteni, am stat de vorba, am votat si-apoi am fost la un festival de film romanesc, unde l-am vazut pe Stere Gulea si 2 din filmele sale.

Ce poate fi mai existential decat aceste doua subiecte? Tratarea lor in doua filme superbe, filme care mi-au marcat dezvoltarea psiho-sexuala.
