Christmas is a time of forced happiness, unmet expectations - i.e., looking forward to spend some time with your family, only to end up annoyed by the same things that caused you to move out as quickly as you could if your parents are alive, or feeling unappreciated by those ungrateful earthlings if you are a parent yourself. No wonder so many of us have started to take the Festivus joke seriously!

The initial motivation in starting this blog was telling a number of "origin" stories. Some I have already told, some I left for later, but for the most part, telling these stories is the main raison d'etre for this collection of characters (i.e., letters, numbers and strange people – the constituent parts of this blog). A inceput ieri-alaltaieri (6 mai) procesul lui Silviu Ionescu, diplomatul roman acuzat de uciderea lui Tong Kok Wai, un rezident permanent Malaysian in Singapore. ..

In articolul precedent, sogori din toata lumea, uniti-va, incepusem sa-mi descriu reactia la citirea unui articol care mi-a placut. Si dupa ce initial am vorbit de spaniarzi si spaniole focoase, aici imi amintesc de o poveste mai personala.

Dupa ce mai demult scriam despre lansarea unei sectiuni romanesti a New York Times Book Review, aflu ca libraria Carturesti este lansata in New York. Desigur ca ma bucur si de bucurie ma mai uit la cateva reflectii ale Romaniei in presa straina.

Doua stiri oarecum interesante ma-mping sa sparg tacerea in care m-am cufundat in ultima vreme. De fapt sunt trei, dar doua au de-a face cu Romania.

Today I met another European woman. Originally from Spain, she told me she worked in the Czech Republic for a while as a translator. Upon learning I'm Romanian, she also felt the need to share with me that there were "a lot of Romanians" in the Czech Republic who wanted to come to Canada but couldn't, because there is no visa treaty. When I told her that there were some problems here with Czech Roma getting visa through fraud and the visa had been suspended, her reaction was to remove her Czech work experience from her resume, out of fear that “Czechs now had a bad name.”
